Why the Yukon for the aurora.

Carcross lies beneath the auroral oval, far from city lights, between Bennett Lake and the mountains. In winter the nights are long, and clear, cold skies are frequent from January to March: the best conditions to see the northern lights.

Nothing is ever guaranteed with the aurora: clear skies and solar activity decide. But a night away from town, at a lodge or a wilderness camp, gives you the best seat there is. And the more nights you stay, the better your chances.

Questions & answers.

When is the best season?

The aurora season runs from late August to mid-April. To combine it with dog sledding, come between December and early April; January to March often bring the clearest, coldest nights.

Are the northern lights guaranteed?

No one can guarantee them. Clear skies and solar activity decide. Staying several nights greatly improves your chances.

How cold is it at night?

Often between −15 °C and −30 °C. Dress in layers: expedition-grade parkas, boots and mitts can be rented in Whitehorse.

How do I photograph the aurora?

A camera with manual settings, a tripod, a wide lens, and spare lithium batteries kept warm in an inside pocket. Recent phones in night mode can work too.
